About this deal

Kate will never forget the day she couldn't protect her younger brother Chris from a terrible attack, and the memory haunts her. He is possessed of two explosively exciting eyebrows, which exert an almost hypnotic attraction over small children, dogs, and - thankfully - one ludicrously attractive human rights lawyer, to whom he is married. Decades later, Kate and Sam are married with a child of their own and Kate still hasn't recovered from the trauma of what happened when she was younger. But when her daughter is threatened and Kate can't quite SEE the threat, can she convince her husband that the violence threat from long ago has now resurfaced.

Because of his talent with clockwork, Joe is recruited to play an unwitting part in a plot, activating a strange old machine. Too late to be admitted to the secret places, too late to be a gentleman crook…" And it must be said that this interest in belatedness raises questions which are, for the admiring reviewer at least, a bit awkward. The great thing about a thriller that moves backwards and forwards in time is all of the nuance and backstory that can make the present day action that much more intense. Can the detective work through this complicated jigsaw before the grisly events of the past repeat themselves? What's more, for all the clockwork and locomotion, the thermodynamics and the Babbage technobabble, Harkaway can't be said to have hitched his bandwagon to the runaway engine of steampunk. Thank you so much to the publisher, Celadon and Macmillan Audio, for providing me with copies to read and review. The last time Katie saw him he was still struggling with addiction, and he stole money from her purse. All the leads point back to two old cases: the gruesome attack on teenager Christopher Shaw, and the despicable crimes of a notorious serial killer who, legend had it, could see the future.

I appreciate the opportunity to provide my opinion and look forward to seeing what North comes up with next.

Honestly, if you’re still reading at this point you may just want to get one of my books, because they are in many ways a more truthful self-description than any biog. A lot of books are fun to read for the plot; a smaller percentage display this artful mastery of the language. The word "actinic" – which seems to have something important to do with electromagnetic radiation – appears about twice too often, even for a novel as long as this one.
