Sure, it’s a bit sludgy and has a slight vegan twang to it, but overall, it’s pretty enjoyable to drink. Not to mention, the My Protein Vegan Protein Blend only contains 102 calories per serving but still packs 5 grams of naturally occurring BCAAs. Anyone who has ever tried a vegan protein shake will know they are very grainy, can be overly thick, and have an earthy taste that is far from palatable. This mix from PhD Nutrition is lauded for its multi-purpose use, ideal for those that aren’t super keen on smoothies.

It makes the porridge (or the water) really creamy, like you’ve used milk (or a milk-alternative), and for this reason I’d recommend not mixing it with milk, unless you want a really thick, viscous shake. First, even though it’s incredibly weak and watery, the banana flavour is overwhelmingly artificial. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, this would be an obvious choice for you, but many meat-eaters prefer these versions too. The Protein Works’ vegan mass gainer contains a monster 39g of protein, 540 calories and 90g of carbohydrates per 150g serving, so you can be sure your body is getting the nutrients it needs to bulk up and recover from intense training sessions. Not only is this protein powder budget friendly – just 44p per serving – but, because it’s pure pea protein isolate, it results in a very smooth shake, even when mixed with water alone (however, our preference is definitely when it’s blended with some milk, ice and a banana – it tastes like a chocolate milkshake). If you want a general lowdown on protein supplements, you should head to our feature on the best protein powders. The plant-based protein is made from rice protein and pea protein and is packed full of essential amino acids like lysine and leucine, as well as many more branched chain acids.

This powder truly is the protein powder version of 'standard' Huel, a leaner, less calorific option for those who don't necessarily want to replace a meal with Huel but would still like to enjoy the benefits of it.

The Vegan Wondershake has it all that made Vegan Protein Extreme great: it's high in protein (85%), low on sugar, virtually fat-free and above all, has an acceptable taste. Each ingredient supplier must pass rigorous audits and checks before being given the Protein Works Quality Seal of Approval. If you excuse me, I must go now to have my third serving of strawberry, elderberry and beetroot protein today. It is not recommended for weight loss, though, due to the high-calorie content but if you are exercising more vigorously, definitely give the Vegan Wondershake a try. Plenty of foods containing high levels of protein haven’t come from an animal, as we’ll explain next.

Blended with some frozen raspberries, banana and just a touch of milk, it tasted like a healthy raspberry ripple ice-cream. It is also gluten-free and, as you would expect with any vegan shake, it is dairy-free and lactose-free too. The product is sweetened with Sucralose instead of Stevia, so if you're opposed to the latter's taste, you can rest assured the Pure Whey Isolate doesn't have any funny aftertaste.

After all, standard protein powders are off the table, as they’re all made of casein and whey, which are both produced using milk. Whey is the protein found in cow’s milk; it’s the liquid that’s leftover after curds are formed and is the most widely-used protein in many powders. It doesn’t mix well, and I dread to think what it’s like blended with water…something akin to the dregs of a bad, limescale-loaded coffee. If you've been on the hunt for a vegan protein source for a while, one you might see frequenting lists is Form Nutrition. It’s a blend of four different organic protein sources – fat-reduced peanut flour, yellow pea protein, raw pumpkin seed protein and hemp seed protein – with no sugars, sweeteners, additives or flavourings.
