About this deal

Sure, waxing gets a bad rap for being painful, but with wax strips we’re talking only seconds of discomfort for weeks of silky-smooth results. Plus, with the right kit and some practice, waxing will soon become a doddle.

We spoke to Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Hiba Injibar, to give us some insight into whether waxing can loosen the skin, cause wrinkles or further emphasise lines in the face.

With at-home waxing kits, you can achieve a salon-smooth finish whenever you want and there’s no travel time or waiting for an appointment. Better still, you don’t have to bare your bits to anyone and you can wince, grimace and blurt out expletives as you pull off the strips without causing offence. Before waxing, wash the area thoroughly with soap and hot water and then dry the skin well. This will open the follicles, making it easier for hairs to be pulled out.

Technically, yes you still can. But you might want to reconsider your appointment. When you’re menstruating, the skin around your pubic bone becomes more sensitive and prone to cramping. Both sugaring and waxing can aggravate the area, so it’s best to reschedule if you can. If you have undergone any chemical skin treatment recently, such as a chemical peel, or are applying active retinol, you would want to take a few days off before your waxing session. These chemical treatments are known to make your skin sensitive, and waxing may lead to skin irritation or other issues. To remove, they’ll either use paper or cloth (for soft waxes) or remove the entire strip of wax itself (for hard waxes), going against the grain of hair growth. Because of this method, hair is more prone to breakage. Sugar wax is one of the oldest known waxing methods, originating in the Middle East. It's also one of the most natural and simple formulas, generally consisting of some combination of sugar, lemon, and hot water. "Sugaring isnotawax: It is a form of depilatory but doesn’t have the same base," Shays explains. Technically a wax or not, there's a reason this hair removal method has been around for centuries.Do not use on varicose veins, scars, moles, spotty, broken, irritated, sunburnt skin or on skin that has had an adverse reaction to waxes in the past.
