About this deal

Efemini does not refrain from straightforward and unapologetic honesty, transporting the reader with the courageous voices of Chioma and Onome. Sometimes our need to achieve a thing causes us to lose sight of the bigger picture, we burn ourselves out with rage or frustration leaving us with nothing. They were unable to achieve their objectives of resisting British censorship and obtaining justice for the Asaba massacre victims, which, in my opinion, held a more important lesson.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Efemini’s passion for history, her heritage, and shedding light on the Asaba massacre of 1967, is evident throughout the pages of A Letter Away From Asaba. I am happy to share that I have been offered the position as Culture Editor at The McGill Daily, an independent student newspaper at McGill University that has been in operation since 1911. Claudia is also a Culture Editor at The McGill Daily whilst currently doing an exchange year at McGill University. I started working on this novella in December 2021 so it is amazing to finally visualise the book and be offered an artistic representation of my manuscript.

Nigerian history is something that I am greatly passionate about and looking through a degree programme that makes little mention of Nigeria sparked a burning desire in me to fulfil my passion through writing historical fiction. There is an instance where Onome gives way too much credit to the British by writing to Chioma that she must be mistaken about her account of the massacre, or the British are censoring the news (come on now). Thank you Retrospect Journal HCA for recognising the importance of this book and announcing it on your platform. The two converse back and forth, despite the heightening threats to their lives, about Asaba and the severe censorship in Britain.Born and raised in London, Claudia spent the latter part of her upbringing in Sweden before moving to Edinburgh to pursue her degree in 2021. The distance emphasizes this issue, making the form of communication even more crucial to the book's plot.
