US Patent 6739278 – Folding rigid-bottom boat, 2004-05-25, archived from the original on 2007-07-17 , retrieved 2007-08-15 This book includes conservation efforts, archeological and environmental studies and good old fashioned beachcombing stories. Baleilevuka, Rusiate (July 10, 2017). "Hollywood stars Woodley and Claflin in Fiji to shoot movie 'Adrift' ". Fiji Village . Retrieved January 30, 2018. The first time I read this book I came away with the impression that Galloway misused data to tell a Ashcraft believes the wind and waves were too powerful for her fiancé, yanking him from the tether and sweeping him overboard.

After the hurricane hit, after Oldham tries to drag herself from the pit of despair, plagued with thoughts of suicide, there’s a point where she steels herself for what’s to come. It's at minimum a plausible argument, and over the course of the book Galloway actually provides solid evidence (some of it in the form of charts, as he ecstatically points out) for it. The problem is 1) Galloway fails to put those ideas all in a sequential paragraph, instead scattering them throughout the book, and 2) he constantly muddies the water with both observations irrelevant to his point and pat aphorisms. (Side note, why does every older man constantly spout " their phrases"? Older men just love aphorisms, and Galloway is no exception)

Just as in 1945 and 1980, America is once again a nation at a crossroads. This time, what will it take for our nation to keep up with the fast and violent changes to our new world?

Nalepka, James; Callahan, Steven (1992), Capsized: The True Story of Four Men Adrift for 119 days, HarperCollins, ISBN 978-0-06-017961-8 Harkavy, Jerry, " 'Adrift' author: Dinghy would have eased ordeal", Burlington Free Press , retrieved 2007-08-16 [ dead link] From bestselling author and NYU business school professor Scott Galloway comes an urgent examination of the future of our nation - and how we got here. Friendship is dwindling — 15% of men and 10% of women have no close friends at all which are close to double the numbers reported 30 years ago. Tami regains consciousness and struggles to understand what has happened. She urgently searches the crippled yacht in hopes of finding Richard and realizes that he was swept overboard. Tami screams in anguish and it is revealed that she is all alone, with no ships or land in sight. Tami finds that the engine will not start, and no one hears her radioed distress calls. She believes she has spotted the lost dinghy with Richard clinging to it, and she tries to steer the yacht towards him. She falls off and nearly drowns as she swims to rescue Richard. After dragging him aboard, Tami realizes that he has broken ribs and a shattered right shin. She fashions a makeshift sail using a broken pole and a storm jib, allowing her to sail toward Hawaii.Listing of available speakers", Cruising World, 2003-12-22, archived from the original on 2007-10-06 , retrieved 2007-08-15 What I really disliked is the way she spoke about Richards family especially his parents. In the beginning of the book she says something mean about his parents, and I immediately thought, hey why did you have to do that? Callahan, Steven, "The Life Raft: Don't Leave Your Ship Without It", equipped.com , retrieved 2007-08-15 (originally published in Ocean Navigator magazine) Thanks, I'll just add this to the other couple dozen terrifying accounts of sharks from books I've read, and be fearful of swimming in deep ocean water forever.] During his journey, Callahan experienced a few positive elements aside from suffering, describing the night sky at one point as "A view of heaven from a seat in hell." He still enjoys sailing and the sea, which he calls the world's greatest wilderness. Since his survival drift, he's made dozens of additional offshore passages and ocean crossings, most of them with no more than two other crew.

For the next few days she got her bearings and rigged her sail to get herself in position so she could use currents she hoped would take her to Hawaii. Social media, for example, makes money when it has our attention. And it does that by appealing to outrage, which drives us apart and harms democratic institutions and norms in the process. In this way, social algorithms inevitably push us to divisive content. I come from a family of book lovers. But if we aren't reading books, you'll probably find us outside. Much of my childhood was spent in outdoor adventures both on land and on sea. So my parents taught me survival skills from a young age. Adrift was probably the book that my dad referenced the most often, so I was familiar with Callahan's story long before I ever read this book. Anyone battling demons of their own will find solace in Callahan's struggle to survive, which is a metaphor for all mens' struggles to survive an often hostile world with often insurmountable odds. From bestselling author, CNN+ host of No Mercy, No Malice, and NYU business school professor Scott Galloway comes an urgent examination of the future of our nation – and how we got here.

Success!

Callahan, Steven (2002-07-01), "Reflections at the Water's Edge", Cruising World , retrieved 2007-08-16 China spends 10x more of it’s GDP on core infrastructure than the United States which is why it shouldn’t be surprising you can get from Bejing to Shanghai in 4.5 hours despite being a greater distance than Boston to DC which takes 7 hours. It’s clear Ashcraft has never forgotten Sharp but he doesn’t haunt her and instead reminds her that life is worth living. Years after her accident, she took the ring he had given her in Tahiti, attached it to a rose and put it out to sea. Ashcraft rigged a makeshift sail from a broken pole and fashioned a pump to keep the cabin from flooding.

Ritter, Doug (2001-10-30), "Equipped to Survive Foundation – Board of Directors", equipped.com , retrieved 2007-08-15 Ten years on, she met another man with ‘captivating blue eyes’ at a dance. She went on to marry him and have two children. The family live on San Juan Island, where Ashcraft can be at peace with what she went through. In September 1983, the future seemed bright for Tami Oldham Ashcraft. She and her fiancé, Richard Sharp, had been sailing for the past six months. D'Alessandro, Anthony (May 30, 2018). " 'Solo' Second Weekend To Induce Post-Memorial Day Slumber At B.O. – Preview". Deadline Hollywood. Penske Business Media . Retrieved May 30, 2018. We’re seeing a decline not just in community organizations but, predictably, in friendships too. In 1990, 40 percent of men and 28 percent of women reported having ten or more friends. By 2021, deep into the age of social media, a staggeringly low 15 percent of men and 11 percent of women said they had that many friends.

Yet, despite that, there are still glimmers of hope scattered throughout our rapidly changing world. While Scott Galloway does discuss major challenges in Adrift, he also brings a refreshing sense of optimism and a willingness to focus on the positive aspects of modern life. It’s both a warning and a hopeful call for a better society. By understanding what’s going wrong, we can make choices that put us on a better course. What I did not like was that it was so short, that she jumped from what was happening on the boat to how she met her boyfriend and such but that is still not a problem.
