Marine habitat restoration is in its infancy, particularly compared with tropical marine and terrestrial habitats. We hope to use what we learn from this project to create a blueprint for restoring temperate marine habitats elsewhere.

Not too many people get to ride a sinking ship to the bottom of the sea – but Jean-Michel Cousteau does. He then watches as fish move into their new home as the sunken ship now turns in to a beautiful artificial reef. Main video: https://youtu.be/MEMjFFFGl1I Q&A video: https://youtu.be/auSfNedCLK8 There are countless ways to approach coastal photography, but they all have one element in common: the water. Water can be used as the main subject in your seascape photos, but it can also be used to integrate and connect all the elements of your composition.

When large numbers of leopard sharks gather in the shallow waters off Catalina Island off the coast of California, scientists have an opportunity to locate and observe tagged sharks. Jean-Michel and his team are on hand to capture the action. But the camera-shy sharks pose a filming challenge, so remote cameras and even disguises are used to assist in getting the elusive close-ups. Mangrove seedlings travel long distances to settle in estuaries and on beaches where they grow a complicated aboveground root system. Due to ignorance, people sometimes cut them down, but mangroves are a useful habitat for young fish and a good way to keep beaches from washing away. Seascapes first became popular in the Romantic era as a form of marine art. Whilst many artists were depicting Britain’s maritime power at this time and documenting battles such as the Napoleonic Wars, over the years the sea itself became a popular subject for landscape painters, who went on to make the ‘seascape’ genre available to the public. A seascape is a photograph, painting or other work of art that depicts the sea. They have long been popular with British artists and art lovers, perhaps because we live on an island and are privy to beautiful shorelines. Sadly, over 50 per cent of the area’s saltmarsh has been lost, equivalent to an estimated carbon fixing potential of around 5,000 tonnes per year. Oyster populations have declined by 95 per cent causing the collapse of the fishery, and all 650 hectares of seagrass beds are in poor condition. These habitats collectively provide numerous ecosystem and social benefits. They act as an important carbon store, helping to reduce the impacts of climate change, provide vital nursery grounds for commercially important fish, protect coastal homes from erosion and sea level rise, improve water quality, and provide areas for local people and tourists to explore their natural environment, helping to improve social wellbeing. We have gone through the necessary settings to master the art of photographing seascapes, but what kind of gear do you need to get the most of the ocean scenes that you want to capture? The people of the Cayman Islands have realized that many fish are more valuable alive than dead on a dinner plate. Underwater celebrities like Freddy the grouper, the tarpons of Tarpon Alley, and the stingrays of Stingray City attract many divers and generate a lot of money for this island economy.
